Free sheet music for sight-reading practice

Sight-reading improves fastest with music you have never seen before. This free sheet music generator writes a new, random exercise every time you press Generate, so you practice reading the notes instead of memorizing a piece. It was made by AJ Hanson of Level Up Your Guitar for guitar students, and it works just as well for piano, violin, flute, trumpet and other instruments.

How to practice

  1. Pick a mode: the Level Up Progression (levels 1 to 11, from three notes on one string up to any key and time) or Free Practice, where you choose the notes, rhythms, key, clef and time signature yourself.
  2. Press Generate to create a fresh exercise.
  3. Set the metronome to a slow, steady tempo and play the line without stopping.
  4. Press Play to hear it back and check your reading, then generate another one.

What you can practice

Whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes, dotted rhythms, ties and triplets; treble, bass and alto clefs; every major key and many time signatures from 2/4 to 12/8. Bach Mode adds four-part harmony with real cadences, and the practice timer helps you build a daily habit.
